Govt. Ranbir College, Sangrur came into existence as Inter College on the occasion of Golden Jublie of Late Maharaja Ranbir Singh of Jind domain in the year 1939. It got converted into a degree college in 1943. Maharaja Ranbir Singh was a great promotor of education and had a great zeal for educational institutes which became foundation of Govt. Ranbir College.
in 1963, the local Ranbir College for girls was merged into this and it turned out as co-educational college. In 1970, this college was added to the jurisdiction of Punjabi University, Patiala. The college is situated on Sangrur-Patiala road having large playgrounds at the entrance and large green lawns inside a total area of 26.42 acres.
The heritage building of the college shows that it is an old building of district Sangrur.  There is a branch of State Bank of India for the convenience of students and faculty members.
We teach B.A., B. Sc., B. Com., M.A. English, M.A. Punjabi and M.A. Political Science . Under HEIS BCA, BBA, PGDCA, Hospitality Diploma in food production, M. Sc. (IT) etc. courses are taught. Special attention is given to overall personality development of the students. Along with Academics, the students are encouraged to participate in literary, sports, curricular and co-curricular activities. Youth festivals conducted by the University provide a platform to the students to show their talent in the various activities like singing, dancing, acting, debate, declamation, quiz etc.
Govt. Ranbir College is one of the famous colleges of Punjab State. It can boast of a new library made with state of art and design.  In addition various magazines and journals are also available. The students can sit in the Reading Room and study in their free time. They can get a book issued for 14 days. So, College library is very helpful in the academic growth of the students. Every session, college magazine 'The Ranbir' is printed which is full of creative writings as given by the students. It is a platform for the students to share their views in the form of essays, articles and poems etc. Having a member of facilities like common rooms, cycle stands, college canteen etc., the college is excelling in Academics, cultural and sports activities. It is famous in the area for special achievements in sports as well.
The college has a rich legacy of doctors, engineers, writers, teachers, International players, artists and ministers. As per the need of the hour, new courses are being introduced which are employment oriented. The college is making progress by leaps and bounds. The students of the college excel in different spheres. The institute acts as a great benefactor to all students of area.
